Methodology
This ranking is compiled directly from the combined FEC, Senate LDA, and USAspending records PlainInfluence maintains for each organization, no figure is typed in by hand, and the numbers update whenever the underlying dataset is refreshed. Organizations with no recorded activity on any of the three tracked dimensions are excluded from this ranking rather than shown with a zero, since a true zero and "no data reported" are different facts.
Where the source agencies suppress a value (for confidentiality, small sample size, or quality control), that record is left out of this ranking rather than displayed as zero. If an agency later revises a figure, the revision appears here automatically the next time PlainInfluence refreshes its data, no manual edit to this page is needed.

What this analysis cannot tell us
FEC contribution data reflects filings to the Federal Election Commission and covers PAC contributions in the displayed election cycle; individual contributions, dark-money channels, state-level PAC activity, and post-Citizens-United outside spending follow different reporting regimes not captured here. Senate Lobbying Disclosure Act totals reflect amounts self-reported by registered lobbyists and lobbying firms, these are spending disclosures, not measurements of policy influence, and do not include activity that falls outside LDA registration thresholds. Federal contract totals are aggregated from USAspending.gov-style data and include both prime contracts and certain subcontract relationships; contract dollar figures reflect obligations, modifications, and termination adjustments and can include multi-year awards. The combined total is an arithmetic sum across three distinct reporting regimes and should not be interpreted as a single measurement of recorded activity intensity. Comparisons across types (PAC versus contractor versus 501(c)(4)) should account for the different legal obligations under each disclosure regime.
